365 days ~ beach cleanup October 2016

This month, I stumbled upon the worst plastics, litter and marine debris problem in all the cleanups I’ve ever done and it is at Fort Funston Beach in San Francisco. Undeniably sad. From the cleanups I have created a minimum of ten compositions and still more to go. Considering I spent many hours conducting cleanups and about twenty pounds of trash removed, I am using every two~ compositions as one cleanup. To see all my beach photos, follow me on Instagram. Angels’ Alert & Synchronicity! ~ I made my way to Fort Funston Beach in San Francisco to do a beach cleanup and within ten minutes, Ayanna and Aljerone jumped in to help me. They said they were just talking about how they wanted to do a cleanup but were unprepared. Aljerone shared, “We manifested you!” In my 252 cleanups this past year, they were the first to offer support!

After the cleanup, they took me out for dinner, and I shared that I gave up my social life for my environmental work and my support of others through my FB group. I got to socialize for a change! I had such a blast – they were so much fun! Much gratitude with mutual benefit!

PS: The recent storm deposited a significant amount of debris. We ended up collecting at least 15 pounds of plastics and trash for cleanup #1.

365 days ~ beach cleanup August 2016

I’d say July’s beach cleanups were artsy fartsy – I really got into my temporary beach plastics compositions. I never knew what I was going to make until it happened – usually inspired by what item I had the most of such as straws and bottle caps, or by some interesting item that would be the central focal point. As far as landfill waste, since it’s summer, most of the trash is litter, as opposed to marine debris. I also made a couple of collections compositions: one was a fishing lure composition and the other was my plastics turned to stones collection – both of which can be found on Instagram. I so look forward to carrying on my beach cleanup journey as I starting on my eighth month! Here is my main page for the 365 Days Cleanup Challenge.

365 days ~ beach cleanup July 2016

Yep, I am a certified beach plastics and litter expert. I am going on to my 176th beach cleanup this year! I visited a lot more new beaches including Pompino, Pescadero, Bean Hallow, Gazos Creek and Wadell Beaches. Basically, I’ve been driving much further south. Last month I hosted a beach cleanup for Montara Beach with the Pacifica Beach Coalition which was fun, and I have been getting sophisticated with how I shoot photos of the collected trash and plastics. I purchased a shallow bin for the trash and I foam core for the plastics. What’s great about the foam core is that there’s a white and black side. With that said, I’m able to choose which side would contrast with the plastic collection the best. I’ve been having a lot of fun creating quick compositions, which makes my cleanups more fun.

Anyway, I document all my photos on Instagram, as well as, pretty ocean pics. Follow me here as I now move on to my seventh month of being an expert litter picker-upper! Here is my main page for the 365 Days Cleanup Challenge.

365 days ~ beach cleanup June 2016

Now moving on to my sixth month of beach cleanups! Last month I found one of the most oddest items – which was the “Cremated Remains of Yo Yo”. You heard me. It was a beautifully carved wooden box and it was left in a very obvious location. I ended up burying it deep within a bush. Anyway, I document all my photos on Instagram, as well as, pretty ocean pics. Follow me here as I now move on to my sixth month of being an expert litter picker-upper! 365 days beach cleanup ~ May 2016

Honestly, I dunno how I am still doing the beach cleanups. So far I have completed 116 cleanups over the course of four months. I’ve identified the most common plastics, general litter and marine debris. I’ve also learned how common it is to stumble across tar – tar that sticks to plastics in the ocean and makes their way to the beach. Probably the most frequent and disappointing trash are dog poop bags. I think I have picked up over 50 at this point! Oh wow, have I become a garbage expert?

I’ve slowed down shooting photos of every bit of trash I pick up. Um, my cell phone bill started to become expensive by uploading each and every photo. But, I have compiled enough photos where I can create photo collages of the same type of littered items – to make a point that we have a huge garbage problem on our hands.

Anyway, I document all my photos on Instagram, as well as, pretty ocean pics. Follow me here as I now move on to my fifth month of being an expert litter picker-upper! Here is my main page for the 365 Days Cleanup Challenge.

Celebrating Earth Day ~ Montara Beach Cleanup

EarthDayCleanupMontara2016

Thanks to the 24 volunteers who joined the Pacifica Beach Coalition and Beach Captains, Wendy, Kevin, Andrew and Kristine for Earth Day 2016 on April 23rd at Montara State Beach, Montara! We were pleased to have five volunteers represent the company, ALOFT SFO! Thanks to Joe from State Parks, based in Half Moon Bay for dropping by in the nick of time to haul away the debris, and leaving us a roll of large clear plastic bags for upcoming cleanups. If it were not for the generous donations from Hassett Ace Hardware of Half Moon Bay, we would not have gloves and buckets for our volunteers!

Many thanks to…
• Ellen, Chris, Moe, Jeff, Daniel, Jennifer and Stephen from Millbrae;
• Dale, Sarah and Harry from Half Moon Bay;
• Ashley, Erica and Julie from Montara;
• Pamela from San Francisco;
• Christina, Zalcari, Kadin and Zidare from Castro Valley and the
• Wiggers family of four from Belmont!

The awesome volunteers collected…
160 pounds of trash, recyclables, and green waste.
53 Plastic Bottles
50 Aluminum Cans
44 Glass Bottles
272 Cigarette Butts

Other items…
• Large metal fence post
• 2 foot long chunk of crumbling styrofoam
• No Trespassing sign
• Burnt wooden pallet
• Rusty metal pipe
• …and last but not least, a plastic bag with soiled wipes and human waste! Julie from Montara gets the Star of the Sea Award for getting this disgusting litter into the garbage can and hiking up and down HWY 1 to pick up trash!

For more information about Pacifica Beach Coalition, click here.

Kristine’s Journal

It was a stunning morning… the tide was rolling in, giving us a show with big, beautiful curling waves and white puffy clouds against a very blue sky. It was a picture-taking morning for sure. I’m not a morning person but if I get out to the ocean as the sun is coming up, I magically become one. Thank god, as I needed that to be able to greet volunteers with a smile and of course, coffee in hand!

Wendy and Kevin covered the North parking lot across from McNee Ranch and Andrew and I handled the South parking lot. We learned that people tend to gravitate to the South parking lot, so we will host the “Every Third Sunday Cleanup” at that location from now on.

At the tail-end of the cleanup, Andrew and I were wondering how we’d get the large disgusting, leaking and alcohol smelling bag of trash up to the dumpster on the side of the restaurant, but right as we were pondering, Joe of State Parks saved the day and threw it in the back of his truck.

We were pleased that many of the volunteers were asking when the monthly cleanups take place, so hopefully our crew is expanding!

Thank You!
