Celebrating Earth Day ~ Montara Beach Cleanup

EarthDayCleanupMontara2016

Thanks to the 24 volunteers who joined the Pacifica Beach Coalition and Beach Captains, Wendy, Kevin, Andrew and Kristine for Earth Day 2016 on April 23rd at Montara State Beach, Montara! We were pleased to have five volunteers represent the company, ALOFT SFO! Thanks to Joe from State Parks, based in Half Moon Bay for dropping by in the nick of time to haul away the debris, and leaving us a roll of large clear plastic bags for upcoming cleanups. If it were not for the generous donations from Hassett Ace Hardware of Half Moon Bay, we would not have gloves and buckets for our volunteers!

Many thanks to…
• Ellen, Chris, Moe, Jeff, Daniel, Jennifer and Stephen from Millbrae;
• Dale, Sarah and Harry from Half Moon Bay;
• Ashley, Erica and Julie from Montara;
• Pamela from San Francisco;
• Christina, Zalcari, Kadin and Zidare from Castro Valley and the
• Wiggers family of four from Belmont!

The awesome volunteers collected…
160 pounds of trash, recyclables, and green waste.
53 Plastic Bottles
50 Aluminum Cans
44 Glass Bottles
272 Cigarette Butts

Other items…
• Large metal fence post
• 2 foot long chunk of crumbling styrofoam
• No Trespassing sign
• Burnt wooden pallet
• Rusty metal pipe
• …and last but not least, a plastic bag with soiled wipes and human waste! Julie from Montara gets the Star of the Sea Award for getting this disgusting litter into the garbage can and hiking up and down HWY 1 to pick up trash!

Kristine’s Journal

It was a stunning morning… the tide was rolling in, giving us a show with big, beautiful curling waves and white puffy clouds against a very blue sky. It was a picture-taking morning for sure. I’m not a morning person but if I get out to the ocean as the sun is coming up, I magically become one. Thank god, as I needed that to be able to greet volunteers with a smile and of course, coffee in hand!

Wendy and Kevin covered the North parking lot across from McNee Ranch and Andrew and I handled the South parking lot. We learned that people tend to gravitate to the South parking lot, so we will host the “Every Third Sunday Cleanup” at that location from now on.

At the tail-end of the cleanup, Andrew and I were wondering how we’d get the large disgusting, leaking and alcohol smelling bag of trash up to the dumpster on the side of the restaurant, but right as we were pondering, Joe of State Parks saved the day and threw it in the back of his truck.

We were pleased that many of the volunteers were asking when the monthly cleanups take place, so hopefully our crew is expanding!

Thank You!
